Use this guide to choose a template, personalize it, and get a clean print. Start with page borders, backgrounds, or printable paper.
1. Choose the right starting file
Gallery pictures help you compare designs. Some open a full-size image; others open the page designer. Where a separate customize or print link appears below the preview, use that link to edit the design.
- For printing: choose the PDF option when it is available. It keeps the page layout together.
- For adding a design to another document: choose an image download when available. PNG can support transparency, but not every template has a transparent background.
- For exact grid measurements: choose a labeled grid on our graph paper page and print without scaling.
- For handwriting: choose children’s lined paper or general lined paper with spacing that suits the writer.
2. Personalize a template
The page designer opens on our custom.backgroundsandborders.com subdomain, often in a new tab. Allow the designer to load before editing. Use its text control to add a name, heading, message, or writing prompt. Select the text to change its size, font, or color, and move it within the design.
If the template supports images, use the image control to add a photo or illustration. Keep important text and faces away from the outer edge, where a printer may crop them. Review spelling and placement before downloading.
3. Download your finished design
Use the designer’s download or export controls. In the older designer, the page icon is the PDF option and the cloud icon is the image option. Available formats vary by template. Check your browser’s Downloads list if the file is not immediately visible.
If an image export does not work but a PDF export does, use the PDF for printing. A gallery thumbnail is a small preview, so avoid enlarging a saved thumbnail to make a full-page print.
4. Choose print settings for your project
| Your project | Setting to try | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Graph paper with a measured grid | Actual size or 100% scale | Measure a printed square with a ruler before using it for measured work. |
| A decorative page border | Fit to printable area if edges are clipped | Fitting reduces the design slightly. Borderless printing requires a compatible printer. |
| Handwriting practice | Start at 100%; adjust only if useful | Resizing changes the distance between writing lines. |
| A landscape design | Landscape orientation | Make sure the preview matches the page direction. |
Match the paper size in the print dialog to the paper loaded in your printer: Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches; A4 is 210 × 297 mm. Print one test page before making multiple copies. Use grayscale for a black-and-white design, or a lighter grid color when you want to save ink.
Fix common download and printing problems
- The designer does not open
- Look for a newly opened tab or a blocked-popup notice. Try the template link again. If it stays on a loading screen, try another browser and report the template URL through Contact Us.
- I cannot find the download
- Open your browser’s Downloads list. Your browser may have saved the file automatically or asked you to choose a folder.
- The page is blurry
- Use the full-size linked image or designer export rather than a screenshot or small gallery preview.
- The border is cut off
- Check orientation and paper size, then try fitting the design to the printable area. Many printers leave an unprinted margin.
- The grid size is wrong
- Turn off fit-to-page scaling, print at 100%, and measure a square. Use a template labeled with the size you need.
